Biography
Md. Mahmudul Hasan
Md. Mahmudul Hasan, an artist from Bangladesh, was born in 1982. From his early childhood days, he loved drawing, painting, crafting, writing, and reciting. Creativity was always a part of his life. He won many awards in different fields during these early years and dreamed of becoming an artist.
But life took another path when he entered the corporate world in 2007, after completing his BSS (Hon’s) and MSS from the University of Dhaka.Presently he is working as an Investment Manager in a private commercial bank in his country. The busy corporate life slowly covered his artistic soul, but it never truly disappeared — it was only sleeping beneath the surface, waiting for the right moment to return.
At the beginning of 2020, the COVID-19 crisis forced the world into a temporary silence. Hasan was also forced to stay indoors for few months like many others. There were no office works, no school duties and he felt the too much emptiness in his soul. Then one day, he took his old brushes again — and it brought back the joy he had long forgotten. At that time, the artist was re-born in him and his creative journey has continued with new passion and purpose.
Hasan loves the watercolor most. The immense world of watercolor allures him much. It’s subtleness, freshness and sometime the uncontrollable predictions make the medium so appealing to him. He always makes experiments with watercolor in many different ways. So, his works do not become stagnant in a particular way but they always evolve to further stages. Sometimes he also works in acrylic, but watercolor remains his true voice. He often says that watercolor teaches him to let go and accept beauty even in unpredictability.
His paintings mostly capture the the lyrical beauty of Bangladesh – the rivers, skies, and light-filled landscapes. He explores both representational and abstract forms, seeking harmony between light, rhythm, and emotion.
His paintings often celebrate the tranquil waterways and shifting moods of nature that varies widely in composition, shape, form, color and light setting. Whether realistic or abstract, his works always grow from a strong sense of composition, rhythm, and light. He believes that shadows are not just dark areas, but gentle spaces full of humor that help the light to sing for life.
Hasan’s works have been shown in many exhibitions around the world, including in Paris, Budapest, Zurich, Prague, Istanbul, Shanghai, New York, and Dhaka. He has received several international awards, such as the Best Painting Award at the Prague International Art Exhibition (2023), and is an Associate Member of the American Watercolor Society (USA).
For Hasan, painting is not only an art — it is a way to feel alive, to find peace, and to leave behind something memorable to the world.
