Md. Mahmudul Hasan
Artist
Md. Mahmudul Hasan (b. 1982) is a contemporary artist based in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Working primarily in watercolor and acrylic, his practice explores landscape as a space of memory, erosion, and quiet transformation.
Creativity was always a part of life from the early childhood of Hasan through active participation in drawing, painting, reciting etc. But life took a different path when he entered the corporate world in 2007. Academically trained in the social sciences and professionally engaged in the Corporate Banking Sector for many years, Hasan sustained a continuous connection with his lifelong passion.
When the COVID crisis forced the world to a temporary silence, Hasan was also forced to stay at home. He felt the too much emptiness in his soul. Then one day, he took his old brushes again — and the artist was re-born. This return marked not as a beginning, but a renewal with intensive studio practice – a disciplined re-engagement with visual language shaped by observation, structure, and reflection.
Paintings of Hasan mostly capture the lyrical beauty of Bangladesh – the rivers, skies, and light-filled landscapes. He explores both representational and abstract forms, seeking harmony between light, rhythm, and emotion.
His landscapes often move between delicacy and tension. Abandoned vessels, altered shorelines, industrial presences, and open river expanses appear not as narrative subjects, but as quiet witnesses of time. Rather than dramatizing change, his work suggests it — through restrained palettes, tonal control, and compositional silence.
Watercolor remains central to his practice for its immediacy and vulnerability, while acrylic allows for a more physical negotiation with surface and density. Together, these techniques form a dialogue between transparency and weight, fluidity and structure.
Hasan’s works have been shown in many exhibitions around the world, including in Paris, Budapest, Zurich, Prague, Istanbul, Shanghai, New York, and Dhaka. He has received several international recognitions including Best Painting Award at the Prague International Art Exhibition (2023). He is an Associate Member of the American Watercolor Society (AWS).
For Hasan, painting is not only an art — it is a way to feel alive, to find peace, and to leave behind something memorable to the world.
ABOUT PAINTING
My work explores water bodies and landscapes as both physical presence and a psychological space. Rivers, boats, and fog-laden landscapes recur in my paintings as lyrical structures of movement, rhythm, and pause. Human figures are deliberately absent; instead, their presence is suggested through boats, pathways, and traces of use. This absence creates a space of solitude, allowing the viewer to enter the scene and experience it personally.
I move between representational and abstract approaches, guided by composition, rhythm, and light rather than narrative. Working in both large-scale acrylics and intimate watercolors, I balance immersion with observation. Acrylic allows me to build expansive spaces with atmospheric depth, while watercolor offers transparency, sensitivity, and immediacy. Shadows in my work are treated as gentle, active spaces that support light and give it resonance.
At times, urban elements and forms appear, not as contrast but as continuation. They echo the same rhythm found in water bodies and movement, extending a dialogue between natural and man-made environments. Through these quiet, uninhabited spaces, I seek moments of stillness where time slows and perception unfolds.
